The Defence Headquarters announced the arrival of 100 United States military personnel in Nigeria on Monday. Officials stated that the troops landed at Bauchi Airfield.
Additionally associated equipment accompanied the deployment. This move aimed to support local forces against ongoing threats.
Statement from Defence Director
Samaila Uba, the defence director of information, issued a statement on the matter.
He explained, “The arrival is planned and deliberate following a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria to the US government to support a clearly defined military training requirement, technical support and intelligence sharing with the members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.” Uba added that the collaboration followed a recent security agreement between the two nations.
Purpose of the Deployment
The US personnel focused on training Nigerian soldiers. Moreover they provided technical support and intelligence sharing.
Uba noted, “The collaboration will provide access to specialised technical capabilities aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to deter terrorists’ threats and enhance the protection of vulnerable communities across the country.” This assistance targeted groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State militants.
First Phase of Larger Effort
Sources indicated that the 100 troops represented the initial group. In fact, the total deployment could reach 200 personnel. The Associated Press reported that the arrival responded to Nigeria’s request for help amid regional security challenges. Moreover the effort included intelligence analysts, advisers, and trainers.
