INEC: 2027 Election Dates Guided by Law, Considers Review Over Stakeholder Concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the dates fixed for the 2027 general election were guided strictly by existing legal provisions.

The commission, however, said it is consulting stakeholders following concerns that the timetable coincides with the Ramadan fasting period.

INEC had earlier announced February 20, 2027, for the presidential and national assembly elections. It fixed March 6, 2027, for the governorship and state houses of assembly polls.

Dates Based on Regulations

In a statement issued on Friday, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee, said the timetable aligns with constitutional and statutory requirements.

According to him, the commission acted in compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

He explained that since 2019, the commission’s regulations have fixed general elections for specific Saturdays in February and March.

“Election to the office of president and vice-president, as well as national assembly, shall hold on the third Saturday of February of any general election year,” the statement quoted the regulation as saying.

It added that governorship and state houses of assembly elections must hold two weeks later.

Consequently, INEC fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the presidential and national assembly elections. It scheduled the governorship and state assembly polls for Saturday, March 6, 2027.

Ramadan Concerns Raised

However, some stakeholders raised concerns that the dates fall within the Ramadan period, when Muslims observe fasting from dawn to sunset.

Critics argue that holding elections during Ramadan could affect voter turnout and participation in some parts of the country.

Responding to the concerns, INEC said it remains sensitive to issues that may impact electoral participation.

The commission added that it has taken note of the representations and is currently consulting widely.

Commission Open to Adjustment

INEC assured Nigerians that it may seek legislative intervention where necessary.

It said any adjustment to the timetable would remain consistent with constitutional and statutory provisions.

The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the credible conduct of the 2027 general election.

It added that the public would be informed of any further developments.
