Fake Brewer and Trader Sentenced to 40 Years for Counterfeit Alcohol Production in Lagos

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced Otuorimuno Aziakpono. Identified as a fake brewer, to 40 years in prison for producing Counterfeit Alcohol Production of wines and spirits. Similarly, trader Ikegwuonu Ikechukwu received the same sentence for selling fake alcoholic beverages.

The convictions came after both individuals pleaded guilty to an eight-count charge of conspiracy and manufacturing unwholesome drinks. The charges were brought against them by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Details of the Case

Prosecutor Banabars Simon revealed that the suspects were arrested following intelligence reports that exposed their illegal operations. They were found producing Counterfeit Alcohol Production of popular brands. Including Hennessy V.S.O.P, Hennessy Very Special, Jameson Irish Whiskey, William Lawson Blended Scotch Whisky, and Gordon Dry Gin.

The arrests took place on December 3, 2025, at two locations: 4 Kojo Street, Ijanikin, Lagos, and 1 Lane 3, Cele Bus Stop, Lagos. During the raid, authorities seized large quantities of fake drinks, along with empty bottles, labels, corks, and packaged counterfeit products.

Legal Violations and Sentencing

The prosecution argued that the defendants’ actions violated the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act and the Food and Drugs Act. They urged the court to impose strict penalties due to the public health risks posed by counterfeit alcohol.

In their defense, counsel Ugochukwu Jonathan requested leniency. Emphasizing that his clients were first-time offenders who had shown remorse and deserved non-custodial sentences.

However, Justice Lewis-Allagoa highlighted the severe health dangers associated with counterfeit alcohol. He sentenced each defendant to five years in prison for each of the eight charges. With an option to pay a fine of N10 million per count. The sentences will run concurrently.
