The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has fixed March 28 and 29 for its national convention.
The decision was announced in a communiqué signed by Abdulrahman Mohammed, factional national chairman of the caretaker committee, and Samuel Anyawu, national secretary.
Background
The move follows a ruling by the Ibadan federal high court, which nullified the convention organised by the Taminu Turaki-led bloc.
Justice Uche Agomoh held that the November convention violated two subsisting court judgments.
As a result, the court declared the exercise null and void.
Consequently, the Wike-backed faction says it will organise a new convention to elect a national working committee (NWC) and other statutory organs of the party.
Congresses to Begin in February
Speaking on the programme of activities, Anyawu said the national executive committee (NEC) has approved a timetable for congresses across the country.
According to him, ward and local government congresses will be held in February.
State congresses are scheduled for March.
These activities will then culminate in the national convention in Abuja on March 28 and 29.
Caretaker Committees Get Tenure Extension
Meanwhile, the NEC approved the extension of the tenure of the national caretaker working committee.
The extension also applies to affected state and zonal caretaker committees.
This, the faction said, will remain in place pending the conduct of national, state, and zonal congresses.
Preparations begin
The bloc has also directed the national caretaker committee to immediately activate convention sub-committees.
It asked the committee to commence full logistical, administrative and consultative preparations.
The goal, it said, is to ensure a transparent, inclusive and credible convention.
