The Abia state government has introduced an Education Management and Information System (EMIS) and a learning identity number to track students’ academic progress.
The initiative, called the Abia State Learning Identity Number (ABSLIN), will strengthen data management. It will also improve planning and curb the unregulated movement of pupils between schools.
Goodluck Ubochi, commissioner for basic and secondary education, disclosed this in a statement after the state executive council meeting in Umuahia.
How the System Works
Ubochi said EMIS will serve as a centralised digital platform. It will warehouse all education-related data in the state.
Meanwhile, ABSLIN will assign each learner a unique identification number. The number will track every student from entry into basic education to completion.
“What we intend to do is what we call Abia State Learning Students Identity Number, where every child in basic and secondary education will have an identification number,” Ubochi said.
He added that the system will help authorities monitor students’ progress. It will also track their movement across public and private schools.
“When there is an identification number, the progress of the child will be monitored right from inception until the person exits basic education,” he said.
Furthermore, Ubochi said the ministry will regulate student transfers. This will ensure proper documentation and continuity of learning records.
Teacher Recruitment Update
The commissioner also disclosed that the state received 36,415 applications in the second batch of its teacher recruitment exercise.
Out of the total, 24,023 candidates have been shortlisted for a computer-based test.
He said the state had earlier employed 5,394 teachers. It now plans to recruit 4,000 more.
Literacy Programme and Achievements
Meanwhile, the Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education Programme for the 2025–2026 academic session has resumed. The programme covers all local governments.
The government has also launched a sensitisation campaign. It targets school dropouts, traders and artisans.
Officials said Abia recently emerged overall best at the National Basic Education School Sports Games. The state won eight gold medals.
They added that Abia has ranked first in NECO examinations for three consecutive years.
