The arrest occurred on his 66th birthday at Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Thames Valley Police conducted searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. Officers held him for about 11 hours before release.

Details of Allegations

The investigation stemmed from newly released Jeffrey Epstein files. Documents showed Mountbatten-Windsor shared confidential trade reports with Epstein in 2010 during his role as UK special envoy for international trade.

Thames Valley Police assessed these claims weeks earlier. However Mountbatten-Windsor denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein.

Release from Custody

Police released Mountbatten-Windsor under investigation in the evening. This status meant he faced no charges yet but remained part of the probe. Thames Valley Police stated: “The arrested man has now been released under investigation.” They also confirmed searches in Norfolk concluded.

Royal Family Response

King Charles III, Mountbatten-Windsor’s brother, addressed the arrest. He expressed deepest concern but insisted on due process. Charles stated: “The law must take its course.” The king made no further comment as he attended engagements.

Background on Epstein Ties

Mountbatten-Windsor befriended Epstein in 1999. Epstein, a convicted sex offender, died in 2019. Revelations from US Justice Department files intensified scrutiny.
