The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a $750 million renewable electrification programme. Aimed at expanding electricity access through the deployment of 1,350 solar mini-grids across the country.
The ambitious initiative designed to strengthen Nigeria’s energy infrastructure while bringing reliable electricity to underserved and off-grid communities.
Expanding Solar Power Access
Under the programme, about 250 of the planned mini-grids connected to the national grid. Helping improve power stability while integrating renewable energy into the broader electricity network.
Officials say the project will also help reduce the country’s dependence on diesel and petrol generators. Which remain a major source of electricity for homes, businesses, and institutions due to inconsistent grid supply.
Unlocking Private Sector Investment
The initiative expected to attract approximately $1.1 billion in private-sector investment, significantly boosting funding for Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
By creating opportunities for private developers and energy companies. The government aims to accelerate the expansion of solar infrastructure while improving long-term sustainability in the power sector.
Powering Universities and Hospitals
The programme also aligns with the Energizing Education Programme, which focuses on delivering large-scale solar power systems to universities and teaching hospitals across Nigeria.
Through this scheme, several higher education institutions and medical facilities are already benefiting from stable electricity generated by solar energy systems. Helping to improve research, healthcare delivery, and campus operations.
Solar for Government Institutions
In addition, public agencies are receiving support under the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative. Which aims to reduce reliance on expensive diesel generators used by government offices.
The initiative expected to cut operational costs for public institutions while lowering carbon emissions and promoting cleaner energy use.
