Tinubu Sets Up Committee to Launch GAMCO for Major Power Grid Reform

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a key step toward overhauling Nigeria’s electricity transmission system. By constituting an 11-member committee to facilitate the establishment of the Grid Asset Management Company Limited (GAMCO).

The initiative, approved by the Federal Executive Council, forms part of the administration’s broader effort to reform the country’s power sector. Also and address persistent inefficiencies in electricity transmission and grid management.

Addressing Grid Instability

Nigeria’s power grid has long faced challenges including frequent system collapses, stranded electricity generation, and aging infrastructure. The creation of GAMCO intended to provide a more structured and efficient framework for managing and maintaining transmission assets.

By introducing a specialised entity focused on grid asset management, the government aims to strengthen oversight. Also improve operational efficiency, and ensure better maintenance of critical transmission infrastructure.

Committee Inauguration

The committee officially inaugurated on behalf of the President by Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President. Who described the initiative as a strategic intervention to modernise Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

He noted that improving the reliability of the national grid is essential for supporting economic growth, industrial development, and stable electricity supply for households and businesses.

Reforming Nigeria’s Power Sector

Energy experts say the establishment of GAMCO could play a significant role in tackling the long-standing structural issues affecting Nigeria’s electricity network. The move also expected to encourage better coordination between electricity generation companies, transmission operators, and distribution companies.

The reform aligns with the government’s broader power sector transformation agenda. That seeks to improve electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the country.

Toward a More Stable Power System

If successfully implemented, the GAMCO initiative could help reduce grid disruptions. Improve power evacuation from generation plants, and strengthen Nigeria’s overall electricity infrastructure.

The government hopes that the reform will ultimately lead to more stable electricity supply, improved investor confidence, and a stronger foundation for Nigeria’s growing energy demands.
