The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) says it is holding Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, based on a valid court order.

In a statement on Tuesday, the anti-graft agency said reports claiming it sought a fresh extension of el-Rufai’s detention on March 17 are inaccurate.

Court Adjourns Hearing to March 31

The commission said it appeared in court for the hearing of an application filed by el-Rufai on March 6.

According to ICPC, the application seeks to overturn the remand order renewed on March 5.

The agency said it served el-Rufai’s counsel its response during the proceedings.

It added that the defence lawyer requested time to reply, prompting the magistrate to adjourn the case to March 31.

ICPC Details Detention Timeline

The commission said the court initially granted a 14-day remand order to allow an investigation into allegations of money laundering and abuse of office.

It said it later secured another 14-day extension on March 5 after the first order expired.

ICPC added that el-Rufai’s attempt to set aside the February 19 remand order was dismissed on March 9.

The agency said the former governor remains in its custody under the valid remand order issued on March 5.

‘We Are Following Due Process’

The commission said it is complying with all court directives, including submitting progress reports as required.

It added that the investigation follows provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

ICPC also said it avoids media trials and prefers to resolve legal matters in court.

The agency urged the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on official updates.
