Violence erupted in South Africa over the coronation of an Igbo traditional ruler. As reported by ALO360 a protest in the Eastern Cape turned chaotic on March 28 2026. Consequently demonstrators torched vehicles and looted foreign-owned shops over the controversial ceremony.
Residents Challenge the Installation
Local residents gathered to oppose the coronation event. Therefore they blocked roads and disrupted the proceedings in the Eastern Cape town.Moreover the demonstrators argued that the Igbo ruler appointment ignored community traditions and local customs.
Crowd Escalates to Arson and Looting
Protesters set several vehicles ablaze during the confrontation. In addition they broke into and looted shops owned by foreign nationals.
As a result thick smoke filled the streets while police sirens echoed across the area.
Police Move in to Restore Order
Eastern Cape police officers responded immediately to the unrest. Furthermore they deployed reinforcements and dispersed the crowd with tear gas and rubber bullets.
Therefore authorities arrested more than a dozen suspects at the scene for public violence and looting.
Officials Condemn the Attacks
Eastern Cape provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembinkosi Mthembu addressed the media. “We will not tolerate this level of violence and destruction of property. All suspects will face the full weight of the law” Colonel Thembinkosi Mthembu stated.
In addition community leaders called for calm and dialogue to resolve the underlying tensions.
