Spain Closes Airspace to US Military Planes in Iran Conflict

Spain closed its airspace to US military planes involved in the war against Iran. As reported by ALO360 the government took the decisive action on March 29 2026 to uphold its neutral position.

Prime Minister Orders Immediate Ban

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez directed the closure. Consequently the Ministry of Defence notified all relevant authorities and implemented the restriction without delay.

Moreover officials stressed that the measure applied to any aircraft linked to operations against Iranian targets.

Government Cites Neutrality Policy

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares explained the rationale. “Spain will not permit the use of its airspace for military actions that could drag the country into the conflict” he stated.

In addition the ministry referenced international agreements that required strict neutrality in foreign wars.

US Planes Face Diversion

The ban forced US military flights to reroute over the Atlantic or through alternative European corridors. Therefore American commanders adjusted mission plans immediately to avoid Spanish territory.

Furthermore NATO allies monitored the situation closely as the decision affected joint logistics.

Iran Welcomes Spanish Stance

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani responded to the move. “This decision by Spain demonstrates respect for international law and opposes aggressive policies” he declared.

As a result Tehran viewed the closure as a diplomatic victory in the region.
