‘We say no to one-party system,’ Obi calls Nigerians to defend democracy

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party has called on Nigerians to defend the country’s democracy, warning against the emergence of a one-party system.

Obi made the call in a short post on X in the early hours of Wednesday, stressing the need for unity among citizens who believe in democratic values.

His statement comes amid a fresh twist in the crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress, where a new faction reportedly emerged on Tuesday.

“We, members and leaders of the ADC, and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed,” Obi said.

“We say no to a one-party system and for that today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land.”

The former Anambra governor’s comment adds to growing concerns among political stakeholders over internal party disputes and broader fears about the health of Nigeria’s multiparty system.

The development within the ADC is the latest in a series of political realignments ahead of future electoral contests, raising questions about party cohesion and democratic stability in the country.
