Vice-President Kashim Shettima has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to avoid internal divisions ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that infighting could weaken the party’s chances.
In a message to party members, Shettima said political competition must not destroy party unity.
He described the APC as a “family” and cautioned against actions that could fracture it during the primary season.
“A political party is not a battlefield. It is a family,” he said.
“And even in the most spirited family, the roof must never be pulled down.”
Shettima warned that the period leading to party primaries often comes with tension, but urged members to exercise restraint.
He said disagreement should not be mistaken for hostility or betrayal.
“We can compete without destroying one another, disagree without demonising one another, and lose without setting fire to the platform that gave us a voice,” he said.
The vice-president also cautioned against external influence and misinformation.
He said party members must resist attempts by “mischief-makers” to sow division within the APC.
He added that the real test of strength lies beyond the primaries.
“The primaries will produce candidates, but the general election will test the strength of our unity,” he said.
“A fractured party may produce a candidate, but only a united party can produce victory.”
Shettima urged aspirants and their supporters to accept outcomes in good faith and remain committed to the party.
He said no ambition should override the collective interest of the party.
“No ambition is worth the destruction of the platform that nurtured it,” he said.
He called on party leaders to ensure fairness and transparency in the process, while urging supporters to remain disciplined.
Shettima added that the APC must prioritise unity and stability as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
