Voting is underway in Ethiopia, but large parts of the country remain excluded from the election.
Polls opened across Ethiopia on Monday for the country’s seventh general election since 1991. However, ongoing conflicts and security concerns mean many citizens will be unable to cast their ballots, including the entire northern Tigray region.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is widely expected to retain power through his ruling Prosperity Party. Voters are electing members of the 547-seat parliament, with the winning party forming the next government for a five-year term.
The election comes nearly four years after the end of the devastating Tigray civil war and amid renewed tensions between Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea. Opposition figures have also raised concerns about political competition, media restrictions and the overall fairness of the electoral process.
The outcome is expected to shape Ethiopia’s political future as the country continues to grapple with security challenges.
