Two killed during protests in Kenya over proposed US Ebola quarantine centre

Violence erupted in central Kenya as residents protested plans for a US-run Ebola isolation facility near a military base.

At least two people have been killed during protests in Nanyuki, central Kenya, over plans to establish a US Ebola quarantine centre at the nearby Laikipia Airbase. Both victims reportedly suffered gunshot wounds, although authorities have not officially confirmed the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets, blocking roads and burning tyres while police used tear gas to disperse crowds. The protests were sparked by concerns that the proposed 50-bed isolation facility could expose local communities to Ebola. Although Kenya has no cases of the disease.

The centre is intended to treat US citizens affected by the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, the project has faced strong opposition from residents, health groups and civil society organisations. Kenya’s High Court has temporarily halted the plan and ordered the government to provide more details about the facility.

President William Ruto defended the proposal, describing it as part of a long-standing partnership with the United States and urging citizens not to politicise public health issues.

The future of the Ebola quarantine centre now rests on ongoing court proceedings and public consultations.
