The US says Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a ceasefire, but the deal depends on Hezbollah halting all attacks.
Israel and Lebanon have agreed to move forward with a ceasefire arrangement, according to a statement from the US State Department.
The agreement was reached after a fourth round of US-brokered talks in Washington. It is however contingent on a complete cessation of attacks by Hezbollah. It also requires the withdrawal of Hezbollah operatives from areas between the Litani River and the Israeli border.
Under the proposed framework, pilot zones will be established where the Lebanese Armed Forces will assume exclusive control. The two countries are expected to resume negotiations on June 22 in pursuit of a broader agreement.
The announcement comes after renewed violence this week. Israeli strikes reportedly killed at least nine people in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah launched rockets and drones into northern Israel. All of which came despite a partial truce announced earlier this week.
The ceasefire plan offers a potential path to de-escalation, but its success depends on whether Hezbollah agrees to halt attacks.
