Saudi Arabia hold Uruguay to a draw in World Cup opener

Maxi Araujo’s late goal denied Saudi Arabia a famous victory in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in a thrilling Group H clash, preventing the Saudis from repeating the opening-game heroics that stunned Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.

Saudi Arabia took the lead just before half-time when Abdulelah al Amri converted from close range after Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to hold Hassan al Tambakti’s powerful header from a corner.

Uruguay responded strongly after the break. Manager Marcelo Bielsa made key substitutions, including replacing Darwin Nunez, and his side dominated possession and chances. Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte struck the post before Maxi Araujo finally levelled the score in the 80th minute after goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais parried a header into his path.

Al Owais produced an outstanding performance, making nine saves, including a crucial late stop to deny Federico Valverde a dramatic winner in stoppage time.

The result leaves Group H wide open following Cape Verde’s shock draw against Spain, with Saudi Arabia still dreaming of a first World Cup knockout-stage appearance since 1994.

Uruguay and Saudi Arabia both take a point from an entertaining contest as the race for qualification intensifies in Group H.
