Bonnie Tyler is out of a coma after undergoing emergency surgery in Portugal. However, the music icon remains in intensive care and is still seriously unwell.
The 75-year-old singer was rushed to a hospital in Faro in May for emergency intestinal surgery. Doctors later placed her in an induced coma to support her recovery.
According to a statement from her team, she “was no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal”.
Although the update brings hope, recovery is taking time. Her spokesperson said, “Although her condition is improving it is a slow process.” The statement also added, “Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time.”
Meanwhile, fans around the world continue to send messages of support. Her team revealed that Tyler is aware of the love she has received and appreciates the good wishes.
As a result of her health condition, several summer tour dates will be cancelled or postponed. Her team said, “We apologise to all of Bonnie’s fans and to our promoter partners for the disappointment that this will cause but trust that you will understand and bear with us in these difficult circumstances.”
They also added, “We hope to see you next year instead.“ Some autumn shows may still go ahead, including her planned performance in Cardiff this December.
Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath, became a global star with Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983. The hit song recently crossed one billion Spotify streams. Over the years, she has earned Grammy nominations, represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013, and received an MBE in 2023 for her services to music.
For now, her family and team are asking for privacy as she continues her recovery journey.
