US-Iran talks show encouraging progress

Mediators say the first round of US-Iran talks has produced positive results and a path toward a final agreement.

The first round of direct US-Iran talks in Switzerland ended with what mediators described as “encouraging progress” toward a permanent agreement to end the conflict.

Qatar and Pakistan, which are jointly mediating the negotiations, said both sides agreed on a roadmap aimed at securing a final deal within 60 days. Technical discussions are expected to continue throughout the week.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said the talks achieved “major progress,” particularly on efforts to end violence in Lebanon.

The mediators also announced plans for a communication channel to ensure safe commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and a new de-confliction mechanism involving the US, Iran and Lebanon.

The talks follow last week’s Memorandum of Understanding between Washington and Tehran, which included commitments to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, ease tensions across the region and negotiate a long-term settlement.

Despite the diplomatic progress, clashes between Israel and Hezbollah continue in southern Lebanon, raising questions about the durability of the wider ceasefire framework.

Negotiators will now move into technical discussions as both sides work toward a comprehensive peace agreement before the 60-day deadline.
