Algeria defeats Jordan to keep World Cup knockout hopes alive

Algeria scored twice in the second half to secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Jordan and keep their World Cup campaign alive.

Jordan stunned Algeria by taking the lead in the 36th minute through Nizar Al Rashdan, who finished neatly after a costly mistake in midfield. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Algeria went into the break trailing.

The North Africans increased the pressure in the second half and found an equaliser in the 69th minute when Nadhir Benbouali headed home from a Riyad Mahrez corner. Amine Gouiri then completed the comeback in the 82nd minute, hooking the ball into the net after another dangerous corner caused problems in the Jordan defence.

Jordan, making their first-ever World Cup appearance, defended bravely for long periods but were unable to hold off Algeria’s relentless attacks. The defeat means the debutants are eliminated from the tournament without earning a point.

Algeria remain in the race for a place in the knockout stage, while Jordan’s historic World Cup journey comes to an end.
