Bandits Threatened to Kill Abducted Oyo Pupils if Troops Advanced – Defence Minister

Oyo pupils

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has revealed that bandits who abducted pupils and teachers from schools in Oyo State threatened to kill the captives if security forces moved closer to their hideout.

Musa said the kidnappers used the children as leverage because some of their commanders are currently in military custody. He disclosed this in a preview of an interview scheduled to air on News Central’s NC Exclusive programme.

Bandits Demanded Release of Commanders

According to the Defence Minister, the abductors hoped the children would force the military to release their detained leaders.

He said security agencies had considered taking action against the criminals. However, the bandits warned that they would kill all the captives if troops attempted a rescue operation.

“They are looking for leverage because we have some of their commanders with us. They feel taking these kids and holding them to ransom will make us release their commander.”

He added:

“They are threatening that if we come any closer, they are going to kill all the kids.”

Kidnapping Happened in May

The minister’s comments relate to the abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and two other schools in Esinle, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Gunmen carried out the attack on May 15, sparking widespread concern over the safety of schools in the state.

Musa Supports Death Penalty

Musa also backed the death penalty for bandits and kidnappers, arguing that tougher punishment would discourage violent crimes.

According to him, weak laws have emboldened criminals and allowed insecurity to persist in many parts of the country.

“There must be deterrence. The laws are soft, and that’s why people take advantage. If they know once you commit an offence, there must be punishment.”

Security Operations Continue

Meanwhile, security agencies have continued operations against bandits and other criminal groups across the country.

The Defence Ministry says the military remains committed to rescuing kidnapped victims while sustaining pressure on armed groups operating in different parts of Nigeria.
