Bonnie Tyler, the legendary Welsh singer behind the timeless hit Total Eclipse of the Heart, has died at the age of 75. Her family confirmed the sad news on Thursday through her official website. According to the statement, Tyler died in a hospital in Portugal after battling an illness.
“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.”
The statement also added,
“We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”
The music icon had faced serious health challenges in recent months. In May, she was placed in an induced coma after emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal. Although she later came out of the coma, her spokesperson revealed she remained “very unwell and in intensive care.”
A Peek At Bonnie Tyler’s Life
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, South Wales, Tyler grew up in Neath before her big break. Talent scout Roger Bell discovered her in a Swansea club. She released her first single, Lost in France, in 1977. That same year, It’s a Heartache became a global success. However, Total Eclipse of the Heart made her an international superstar in 1983. The chart-topping classic also made her the first Welsh singer to reach number one in the United States.
Tyler built an unforgettable career with her powerful voice and emotional songs. She also thrilled fans with Holding Out for a Hero, another classic written by Jim Steinman. The song later gained fresh popularity after appearing in Shrek 2. Speaking about Total Eclipse of the Heart, Tyler once said,
“I never get tired of singing it. I love it because everyone can’t wait to sing it.”
She received three Grammy nominations during her career. In addition, she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013. She was also awarded an MBE in 2023 for her services to music.
Even in recent years, Tyler remained active in the music industry. Last year, she released Together, a dance version of Total Eclipse of the Heart with David Guetta and Hypaton. Earlier this year, the original song crossed one billion Spotify streams. Reacting to the milestone, she joked,
“I’m really happy, when you think about it, there’s only 8.3 billion people in the world.”
Bonnie Tyler is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan. Although her voice has gone silent, her timeless songs will continue to inspire music lovers across generations.
