Liberian authorities have seized cocaine worth more than $370 million in what officials describe as the country’s biggest drug bust on record.
The operation took place in Duazon, about 20km east of the capital, Monrovia, where police raided a suspected storage facility. Videos released by investigators showed dozens of sealed suitcases and boxes loaded inside a lorry. Forensic tests later confirmed the substance was high-grade cocaine.
Police chief Gregory Coleman said the raid followed months of intelligence gathering into drug-trafficking networks operating in Liberia.
“Between 2018 and 2023, apparently there was a resurface of major trafficking and transiting in Liberia. Over the last one-and-a-half years, we’ve been surveilling them and this is the result of that operation,” Coleman said.
He added that the drugs were “tested and confirmed” to be cocaine and described the haul as the “largest drugs bust” in Liberia in recent years.
Several suspects, including two foreigners and several Liberians, were arrested during the operation. Police said one foreign suspect carried Spanish and Colombian passports, while the other held a Serbian passport. Investigators are still trying to determine where the shipment originated and its intended destination.
Vice-President Jeremiah Koung praised security agencies, warning that anyone found guilty would “feel the full weight of the law, regardless of who you are.”
The seizure follows another major cocaine interception at Roberts International Airport last month. Authorities continue to investigate suspected international trafficking networks operating through Liberia.
