Elon Musk has stirred fresh reactions online after making a surprising claim about Nigeria’s population. The billionaire businessman said Nigeria recorded about four million more births than the entire European Union in 2025. He shared the statement on his verified X account and cited his AI chatbot, Grok, as the source. Musk wrote,
“Nigeria alone had 4 million more births than the entire EU last year.”
According to data from Grok, Nigeria recorded an estimated 7.8 million births in 2025. In comparison, the European Union recorded about 3.5 million births during the same period. That means Nigeria welcomed roughly four million more babies than all EU member states combined. The figures have sparked fresh conversations about Nigeria’s fast-growing population and its future.
Meanwhile, the claim comes at a time when population growth remains a major topic in Nigeria. Although the country has one of the world’s highest birth rates, many experts continue to raise concerns about jobs, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Earlier this year, UNICEF revealed that 14 million Nigerian children had their births officially registered over the previous two years. The announcement highlighted ongoing efforts to improve birth registration across the country.
Interestingly, Musk’s post also followed recent comments by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. Speaking at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit, Sanusi said Nigeria’s economy was growing faster than its estimated 250 million population for the first time. Before this latest post, Musk had also predicted that technology could make money largely insignificant by 2036.
His latest statement has now added another talking point to the growing debate about population growth, technology, and the future of developing nations.
