Vincent Pastore, the popular actor best known for playing Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in The Sopranos, has died at the age of 80. Several US media outlets confirmed the sad news. He was found at his home in the Bronx, New York City. According to CBS News, there was no sign of criminal activity. Fans across the world are now remembering the actor who helped make one of television’s greatest crime dramas unforgettable.
Pastore became a fan favourite through his role as Tony Soprano’s loyal friend who later turned FBI informant. His shocking death in season two remains one of the most talked-about moments in The Sopranos. Even so, his impact stayed strong throughout the series. His manager, Robert Attermann, paid an emotional tribute, saying,
“To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable ‘Big Pussy,’ but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more.”
He also added,
“He loved being an actor. He was passionate about his craft and was always encouraging, respectful, and generous with young actors.”
Born in the Bronx in 1946, Pastore first served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. After leaving the military, he followed his passion for acting. Soon, he landed roles in classic films like Goodfellas and Carlito’s Way. He also appeared in popular TV shows, including Law & Order, General Hospital, and Hawaii Five-O. As his career grew, audiences admired his tough but relatable screen presence.
Although many remember him as Big Pussy, Pastore’s career stretched far beyond one role. In 2000, he and the The Sopranos cast won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
