The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria (CLCN) has defended Cardinal John Onaiyekan following the Presidency’s reaction to his recent interview about a private meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).
The council, which represents more than 38 million Catholic faithful, said the Church has a moral duty to speak truth to power, defend the vulnerable and hold leaders accountable with truth and charity.
Council defends Cardinal’s comments
In a formal press statement, the CLCN said Cardinal Onaiyekan spoke in the public interest. It insisted that he did not reveal confidential details from the meeting with President Tinubu.
The council argued that issues surrounding the economy, security and justice affect every Nigerian. It said such matters cannot remain confined to closed-door meetings because they directly affect the lives of more than 200 million citizens. According to the council, the Cardinal raised moral concerns that deserved public attention rather than exposing private discussions.
Church reaffirms its role
The CLCN said speaking on national issues remains part of the Church’s mission whenever justice, human dignity and the common good are under threat. It described Cardinal Onaiyekan as a man of peace, dialogue and integrity. The council added that his intervention sought to awaken the nation’s conscience, not embarrass the Federal Government. It also said the Church would continue to offer constructive guidance to leaders while promoting justice, peace and responsible governance.
Calls for dialogue
The council expressed solidarity with Cardinal Onaiyekan and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria. It urged the Church and the government to sustain constructive dialogue for the benefit of the country. The CLCN also encouraged Nigerians to pray for the nation’s leaders. It further called on citizens to support policies that bring relief, strengthen security and promote justice across the country.
