Be Careful With Trump, Osoba Warns Nigerians

Trump warning — Osoba cautions Nigerians at book launch

Former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, has urged Nigerians to handle their relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump cautiously, describing him as “a man who must be handled with care.”

Osoba gave the warning while chairing the public presentation of “Beyond Expectations – A Memoir”, a new book written by veteran journalist Yakubu Mohammed, in Abuja.

He cautioned that Nigeria must avoid any foreign interference that could worsen its internal challenges. According to him, citizens must unite not only for President Bola Tinubu or the government but for the survival of the country itself.

“We have to be very, very careful with Trump,” Osoba said. “Let us unite, not because of Tinubu, not because of government, but because of Nigeria. We don’t deserve any intervention that could complicate our situation.”

Osoba Cites Examples from World Leaders

The elder statesman compared how world leaders approach Trump differently. He said while the Ukrainian President confronted Trump, the UK Prime Minister took a more diplomatic approach by presenting a letter from the King, which softened Trump’s stance.

“Let’s learn from that,” Osoba advised, stressing that diplomacy should guide Nigeria’s response to international matters.

Calls for Religious and National Unity

Osoba also called for unity beyond religious and political lines. Referring to the prayers offered during the event, he noted that Nigerians must focus on fighting terrorism and insecurity, not each other.

“When the Christian prayed, I joined him. When the Sheikh prayed, I joined too,” he said. “Religion isn’t our biggest issue; the real battle is against ISIS and insecurity.”

He praised prominent Nigerians who have shown support for the current administration amid recent tensions with the U.S. government. He cited Peter Obi and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who have both emphasized the need for national focus and peace.

Book Highlights Journalism Excellence

The event celebrated Beyond Expectations, a memoir chronicling the rich career of Yakubu Mohammed, one of Nigeria’s most accomplished journalists and editors. The book details decades of commitment to journalism, media leadership, and public service.

Conclusion

Osoba’s message emphasized caution, unity, and diplomacy as Nigeria faces growing international pressure. His remarks serve as a reminder that collective strength remains vital in defending national interests.
