Badaru Resigns as Defence Minister Over Health Reasons

Badaru resigns as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence with immediate effect. Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar submitted his letter of resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 1. He cited health reasons for stepping down from the role.

The Presidency confirmed the resignation on Monday. President Tinubu accepted Badaru’s decision and thanked him for his service to the nation. The President praised his commitment during a critical time in Nigeria’s security history.

Officials said the President will soon forward the name of a replacement to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation. This announcement may come later this week.

Badaru Resigns Amid Security Emergency

Badaru resigns at a sensitive time for Nigeria. President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency. The government plans to outline new strategies soon to tackle rising threats across the country.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that the resignation connects to the wider security restructuring process. He said the administration will announce further steps in due course.

Nigeria continues to face security challenges in different regions. These include banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping. The leadership change at the Defence Ministry comes as the government pushes for stronger coordination among security agencies.

Badaru’s Record in Public Service

Badaru resigns after a long career in public service. He served as Governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023. After completing his tenure, President Tinubu appointed him as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.

At 63, Badaru remains a key political figure in northern Nigeria. His exit marks a significant shift in the country’s defence leadership at a time when national unity and security reforms remain a top priority.
