Nigeria, US Seal Major Deal to Boost Disease Surveillance, Healthcare

Nigeria and the United States have signed a major agreement to strengthen disease surveillance and improve healthcare delivery across the country.

The Federal Ministry of Health confirmed the development on Saturday.

The Memorandum of Understanding aims to deepen health cooperation and build a resilient, self-reliant health system for Nigerians.

Health Minister Explains Focus Areas

Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, described the agreement as a strategic partnership.

According to him, the deal will improve disease surveillance and outbreak response.

It will also strengthen laboratory systems nationwide.

Pate said the partnership would expand access to essential healthcare services.

He added that frontline health workers would receive stronger institutional support.

FG Commits to Increased Health Funding

Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to health financing.

He said Nigeria plans to increase domestic funding for the health sector gradually.

According to Edun, the partnership will mobilise Nigerian and US resources over the next five years.

The funds will support ongoing health reforms and expand quality primary healthcare.

Strengthening Health Security

Officials said the agreement would boost Nigeria’s ability to prevent and respond to public health threats.

They noted that the MoU supports long-term health security planning.

The deal also aims to protect citizens from future disease outbreaks.

Global Cooperation and Health Goals

Furthermore, officials said the partnership highlights the importance of international cooperation.

They stressed that global collaboration remains vital in tackling health challenges.

Nigeria, they added, remains committed to universal health coverage.

The government also pledged to improve healthcare outcomes nationwide.
