A Northerner Has No Business Contesting Presidency in 2027, Says Fintiri

Umaru Fintiri

Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa state, says no northerner should contest the presidency in 2027, insisting it remains the turn of the south to complete its tenure.

Fintiri spoke on Tuesday during an interview on Sunrise Daily, a morning programme on Channels Television.

He said the stability of the country should take priority over personal ambition.

“A northerner has no business at the moment to vie for the office of the president,” he said.

According to him, even if the law does not bar anyone from contesting, morality should guide political actors.

“It is not about law. It is about morality,” he added.

‘Support Tinubu to Complete Tenure’

Fintiri said if no strong southern alternative emerges, Nigerians should support President Bola Tinubu to complete his tenure.

“We should support Bola Tinubu to complete his tenure. After all, he has done so much. He is doing so much,” he said.

The governor argued that Tinubu has introduced policies that are beginning to yield results.

He added that many Nigerians, including what he described as the “silent majority,” want to preserve unity and political stability.

On Atiku’s ambition

When asked why he left his former party, the PDP, he said he had not seen any formal declaration within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“I have not seen any presidential candidate who has come out to tell me he wants to contest,” he said.

He added that he could not jeopardise his political future based on rumours.

Although he acknowledged maintaining a good relationship with Atiku Abubakar, Fintiri said both men have chosen different political paths.

“There’s nothing that has gone bad. It is just that everybody has taken his political ways,” he said.

On Commissioner’s Resignation

Fintiri also addressed the resignation of Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of the former vice-president, from his cabinet.

He said the government excused him to align politically with his father.

“We excused him out of the government so that he can pitch with his father, which is the normal thing to do,” Fintiri said.

He stressed that the decision was not solely political but also a matter of personal and moral consideration.
