During the November edition of his monthly media interaction in Umuahia, Governor Okezie Otti appealed to residents to remain security-conscious throughout the festive period.
He emphasized the importance of vigilance and personal responsibility. “Intelligence is key. Give information, take charge of your security, and don’t fear,” he said.
Government Collaborates With Security Agencies
Governor Otti revealed that the state government holds regular consultations with security agencies. These include the police, army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The goal is to strengthen intelligence gathering and respond quickly to emerging threats.
Focus on Prison Review and Minor Offenders
The governor also highlighted cooperation with the Nigerian Correctional Service. He explained that his administration reviews the status of inmates in state facilities.
Otti recently met with the Zonal Commandant of the Service and inspected ongoing projects. These include perimeter fencing and a one-storey holding centre to reduce congestion.
Although the Correctional Service is federal, the governor stressed that inmate welfare, especially for Abia citizens, is a state priority.
End-of-Year Pardons for Minor Offenders
Governor Otti disclosed that previous attempts to grant pardons under the prerogative of mercy did not find any eligible minor offenders.
He has now directed the Service to conduct a fresh review to identify any inmates who qualify for consideration before the end of the year.
“In the last two years, we could not find minor offenders. All 1,900-plus inmates had serious offences. I have asked the Zonal Commandant to check again as we mark year-end,” Otti said.
