Governor Alex Otti led a special switch-on ceremony at Central Primary School in Obehie on Monday. Residents gathered in excitement as electricity returned to their homes and streets. This event ended a nine-year period of darkness for 33 communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area.
Historical Context of the Blackout
Neglect plagued these oil-rich communities for years. Faulty infrastructure and lack of maintenance caused the prolonged blackout. As a result, daily life suffered, with businesses closing early and homes relying on generators.
Governor’s Commitments and Statements
Otti recalled his promise from March 2025 to restore power. He urged residents to protect facilities from theft. Additionally, he directed local leaders to discuss subsidizing high electricity bills for those in need.
Technical Aspects of the Restoration
Workers rehabilitated 30 transformer distribution substations. They installed 12 new transformers and restored 34 kilometers of high-tension lines. Moreover 3.5 kilometers of low-tension lines now function. Aba Power Limited supplies the electricity outside the national grid, covering nine local government areas.
Community Responses
Local leaders expressed gratitude during the event. Hon. Godwin Adiele praised the administration’s efforts and pledged support for future elections. Meanwhile Rev. Joshua Onyeike called the restoration a sign of greater developments ahead.
Economic and Social Impacts
Power supply increases business activities. For example, businesses can extend their operating hours. Moreover families can now ensure their security during the night since roads and houses can be illuminated. Thus, the project improves the standard of living.
Future Initiatives
Otti assured continuous supply and more upgrades. The government plans to meter communities for fair billing. Furthermore stakeholders will address affordability issues. As a result, Abia State moves toward widespread infrastructure improvements.
