The Abia State Police Command has arrested three elderly Abia gun runners and recovered a cache of firearms during a targeted intelligence-led operation in Obingwa Local Government Area. Moreover, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to stop illegal arms movement across the state.
Identities of the Abia Gun Runners Revealed
Police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka confirmed the arrest in a Thursday statement. She identified the suspects as Nworu John (65), Chikezie Ubani (65) and Collins Ukandu (55). According to her, officers acted on credible intelligence and stormed the hideout in the early hours of 11 December.
Furthermore, Chinaka said the swift operation prevented the suspects from relocating the weapons.
Police Recover Multiple Firearms in Operation
Officers recovered seven firearms from the suspects. The items included two automatic pump-action guns, three locally made double-barrel guns, one single-barrel pump-action gun and a locally fabricated six-round revolver. Additionally, police seized four live cartridges.
Chinaka added that the suspects are now undergoing interrogation as investigators work to uncover more details about the illegal network.

She noted that the Command has recovered several weapons in recent weeks. Many suspects have also been prosecuted. Moreover, she explained that the police will continue aggressive security operations as the Yuletide season approaches.
Police Urge Residents to Report Suspicious Activities
Commissioner of Police CP Danladi Isa reaffirmed his commitment to protecting residents before, during and after the festive period. Therefore, he urged citizens to remain alert and report suspicious movement through the Command’s emergency contacts or the nearest police formation.
