Abia State Government approved a partnership with Quantus Medical Foundation, a US-based medical group, to train health workers across all categories in the state. Officials formalized the collaboration through the Abia State Diaspora Commission in December 2025.
The initiative focused on improving emergency response and reducing preventable deaths in public facilities.
Training Programme Launch
Authorities commenced Basic Life Support training for frontline health workers on December 16, 2025, in Umuahia. The programme targeted personnel from primary healthcare centres and general hospitals.
Additionally, it included Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support sessions to equip staff with critical skills. Trainers conducted workshops to enhance CPR proficiency and patient outcomes.
Key Participants and Roles
Dr Nnenna Ihekoromadu, founder of Quantus Medical Foundation in Texas, led aspects of the training. She collaborated with Dr Odinaka Anyanwu, assistant professor of family medicine. Furthermore the state integrated this into a week-long Global Medical Mission that offered free consultations and surgeries.
Official Statements
Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, Commissioner for Health, highlighted the programme’s components. He stated, “In this programme, we have a training aspect, where we are training frontline healthcare workers on basic life support and advanced cardiovascular life support. This training is also ongoing to be able to ensure that our health care workers are given the right skill sets that they will require to save the lives of our people.” Meanwhile Governor Alex Otti emphasized universal healthcare access. He said, “We have instituted training of healthcare professionals in the areas of CPR.”
Broader Health Sector Efforts
The partnership aligned with ongoing reforms, including recruitment of 649 new medical workers in January 2026. Authorities employed nurses and doctors to strengthen primary care. Moreover the government continued free medical outreaches and collaborations with global organizations to bolster the sector.
Programme Conclusion
Officials concluded the initial training phase on December 22, 2025. Participants gained certifications to improve service delivery. The state planned further sessions to sustain skill development across facilities.
