The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, addressed the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Ifunanya Nwagene, a talented soprano singer known as Nanyah, who succumbed to severe neurotoxic complications from a snake bite on January 31, 2026.
The hospital firmly rejects allegations of negligence, inadequate care, or unavailability of anti-snake venom, describing such claims as unfounded and misleading.
Despite intensive efforts, including CPR, the team failed to revive her. Nwagene passed away on January 31, 2026. The hospital expressed deep condolences to her family.
“First and foremost, we express our deepest condolences to the Nwagene family during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of a loved one is never easy, and our thoughts are with them,” the statement read.
Allegations and Denials
Social media users raised claims of negligence soon after. They alleged a shortage of anti-snake venom and poor response at FMC. Content creator Aproko Doctor criticized public hospitals for lacking essential drugs.
FMC rejected these allegations firmly in a statement signed by Bioku Muftau. “The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation,” the hospital stated. Additionally officials emphasized their commitment to transparency and quality care.
Sam Ezugwu, music director of Amemuso Choir, shared details of her final hours. He noted that doctors mentioned a need for two doses of anti-venom, but only one was available. “The venom had spread,” a doctor told him.
Remembering Nwagene
Amemuso Choir announced Nwagene’s death on social media. “Amemuso Choir regrets to announce the sudden demise of our beloved soprano Ifunanya Nwagene who passed away yesterday, 31st January 2026 at Federal Medical Centre due to a snake bite,” the post stated.
The choir described her as a promising talent. “A rising star, Ifunanya was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world. Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed,” they added.
Meanwhile the music community mourned her loss widely. Burial arrangements followed later announcements. The incident highlighted challenges in snake bite treatment in Nigeria.
