The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the immediate release of Nasir El-Rufai or his arraignment before a court of competent jurisdiction.
In a statement on Wednesday, Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson of the party, said the continued detention of the former Kaduna governor raises concerns about respect for the rule of law.
Party Raises Concerns Over Rule of Law
The ADC said El-Rufai’s detention reflects a troubling trend, describing it as a stain on Nigeria’s democracy.
The party warned that the situation signals a “dangerous descent into lawlessness” under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
According to the statement, freedom is a constitutional right and not a privilege granted by the executive.
The ADC said if the government intends to operate outside the constitution, it should state so clearly.
It added that such actions would suggest a shift away from democratic principles.
Calls on Security Agencies to Act Within the Law
The party called for the immediate and unconditional compliance of all relevant authorities with the provisions of the constitution.
It specifically named the office of the national security adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and other agencies involved.
The ADC urged the government to either release El-Rufai or charge him to court without delay.
Criticises Tinubu’s Democratic Credentials
The party also criticised Tinubu’s democratic record, noting his past association with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
It described the current situation as ironic, saying actions under his leadership now mirror the abuses NADECO once resisted.
