‘Zone Presidential Ticket to South,’ Coalition Group Tells ADC

The Coalition for Good Governance (CGG) has asked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to southern Nigeria.

The group said zoning the ticket to the south would restore national balance. It added that the move would strengthen the coalition’s electoral chances.

Speaking to journalists, the coalition said equity demands a southern ticket. It said political reality also supports that position.

The group comprises former national party chairmen and ex-presidential candidates from the six geopolitical zones.

“The nation is deeply polarised and economically distressed,” the group said.

“The path to victory and national healing lies in fairness.”

CGG insisted that zoning the ticket to the South is morally compelling. It also described it as electorally strategic.

The coalition warned that delaying a decision on zoning could spark internal divisions. It said such uncertainty could weaken the ADC’s credibility ahead of the 2027 general election.

Coalition Slams Tinubu Over Electoral Act

The coalition also criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assenting to the amended Electoral Act.

CGG described the amendment as a setback. It said the move could erode public trust in the electoral process.

According to the group, the rejection of mandatory real-time electronic transmission creates room for manipulation. It said the decision could also encourage voter intimidation and post-election disputes.

“Electronic transmission safeguards data integrity,” the group said.

It added: “It reduces human interference and restores public trust.”

The coalition said resistance to electronic transmission amounts to resistance to transparency.

It accused the National Assembly of Nigeria of enabling democratic backsliding. It labelled the amendment “the civilian equivalent of a coup.”

The group urged the international community to engage Nigerian authorities. It asked them to reconsider provisions it described as anti-democratic.

Raises Alarm Over One-Party State

The coalition also raised concerns about a possible drift toward a one-party state under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It cited the recent defections of opposition governors and federal lawmakers. It described the trend as political consolidation.

“A one-party state eliminates accountability,” the group said.

It added: “It suppresses dissent and weakens constitutional democracy.”

The coalition warned that Nigeria must not descend into political absolutism.

CGG said opposition stakeholders may rethink their participation in the 2027 polls. It said they would do so if the electoral framework remains flawed.
