AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Secure 4–0 Win Over Mozambique

The Super Eagles booked their place in the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals after recording an emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique in their Round of 16 encounter in Fès.

Nigeria started the match with confidence and control. The team built on an impressive group-stage campaign, having won all three matches to finish top of Group C. From the opening minutes, the Super Eagles dictated the pace.

Super Eagles strike early and take control

Mozambique, who reached the knockout stage for the first time as one of the best third-placed teams, struggled to cope with Nigeria’s intensity and movement.

The breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute. Ademola Lookman calmly finished after receiving a well-timed assist from Akor Adams.

Soon after, Nigeria doubled their lead. Victor Osimhen found the net in the 25th minute to put the Super Eagles firmly in control before the break.

Nigeria extend lead after the restart

Nigeria continued their dominance in the second half. Just two minutes after the restart, Lookman again provided the assist as Osimhen struck his second goal to make it 3–0.

The Super Eagles completed the rout in the 75th minute. This time, Akor Adams got on the scoresheet to cap a commanding team display.

Solid performance across all departments

In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi led alongside Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, providing balance and control. Meanwhile, the defensive unit of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi kept Mozambique quiet throughout.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali returned to the starting line-up and remained largely untested. By the 80th minute, Nigeria had recorded eight shots on target, while Mozambique failed to test the Super Eagles’ goal.

Nigeria march into quarter-finals

Head coach Finidi George introduced fresh legs as the match progressed. Paul Onuachu, Samuel Chukwueze, Tom Dele-Bashiru, Raphael Onyedika, and Moses Simon all featured as Nigeria comfortably saw out the game.

With the win, the Super Eagles advance to the quarter-finals and maintain their push for a fourth AFCON title. Nigeria will next face the winners of the clash between Algeria and DR Congo.
