The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested three masquerades for allegedly parading the streets without authorisation and attacking innocent residents during a cultural celebration in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists in Uyo. He said the arrests were made in Eket Local Government Area during the Ekid Day celebration held over the weekend.
According to Azare, the masquerades allegedly injured several residents while displaying on public roads without police approval. He confirmed that those injured are currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals across the state.
Masquerade Activities Violate Executive Order
The police commissioner explained that the suspects acted in clear violation of an executive order recently signed by Governor Umo Eno. The directive bans masquerades from operating on streets or public highways without prior police permission and adequate security coverage.
Azare recalled that the governor had earlier expressed respect for Akwa Ibom’s cultural traditions. However, he noted that the restriction became necessary due to repeated cases of violence, extortion and public disorder linked to masquerade activities.
“The Command is enforcing the Executive Order of the Akwa Ibom State Government restricting masquerade activities to approved locations with mandatory police permission,” Azare said. “This measure has significantly reduced violence and disorder across the state.”
Police Record Major Crime-Fighting Gains in 2025
Beyond the arrests, the commissioner highlighted the Command’s broader achievements in 2025. He revealed that police operatives recovered 179 assorted firearms and 323 rounds of ammunition during the year.
In addition, officers arrested 563 suspects for various offences and charged them to court. The Command also recovered 14 stolen vehicles, which were returned to their rightful owners.
Azare further disclosed that police rescued 74 victims of human trafficking and reunited them with their families. He added that officers saved 10 kidnapped victims and secured 33 convictions within the year.
Previous Arrest Linked to Masquerade Group
The police chief also recalled a similar incident in November, when the Command arrested a leader of the Ekpo masquerade group, Uwem Umanah, over alleged criminal activities. Police said the arrest followed a distress call reporting attacks on citizens, highway obstruction and extortion.
The Command reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law while respecting cultural practices conducted within approved and peaceful limits.
