Army Arrests 14 Terror Suspects, Names Alleged Mastermind of Suicide Bombings in Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have arrested 14 terror suspects and identified Shariff Umar, also known as Yusuf, as the alleged mastermind behind a suicide bombing network operating in Borno State.

The army disclosed this on Saturday after intelligence-led operations in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.

Suspect Allegedly Coordinated Suicide Bombings

According to Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the Media and Information Officer of OPHK, preliminary investigations show that Umar played a central role in the terror network.

He allegedly coordinated the recruitment, preparation, and deployment of suicide bombers. In addition, investigators said he oversaw the movement of improvised explosive device (IED) components across locations in the North-East.

Arrests Follow Intelligence-Led Operation

Uba said troops uncovered the network during a cordon-and-search operation conducted on December 31 in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri. During the operation, troops arrested 14 suspects believed to be directly linked to suicide bombing activities.

“During investigations, a suspected suicide bomber currently in custody, Ibrahim Muhammad, identified Shariff Umar as the ringleader and coordinator of the network,” Uba said.

Linked to Gamboru Mosque Bombing

Further intelligence revealed that Umar allegedly coordinated the December 24 suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque. According to the army, an accomplice identified as Adamu detonated a suicide vest during the attack under Umar’s direction.

Foiled Damaturu Attack Also Traced to Umar

Investigators also linked Umar to a foiled suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu. Uba said Umar personally handed over IED components to the intended bomber in Maiduguri before security forces intercepted the plot.

Family Members Allegedly Involved

The investigation further uncovered domestic links within the network. According to Uba, Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu, allegedly played a role in the operation. His stepdaughter, Amina, also told investigators that she had previously seen the suspected bomber inside their home.

“These findings show how terrorist facilitators hide within families and communities to evade detection,” Uba said.

Investigations Continue

Meanwhile, all suspects remain in custody as security agencies intensify investigations. Uba said the military aims to dismantle the entire cell, identify additional collaborators, and recover any remaining explosives or logistical materials.

Army Urges Public Vigilance

The OPHK spokesman stressed the importance of intelligence sharing and community cooperation.

“Terrorist networks often survive by hiding within communities,” Uba said. “Therefore, timely information from law-abiding citizens remains vital to preventing attacks and saving lives.”

He urged residents to report suspicious persons or movements promptly, noting that trust between civilians and security agencies remains key to lasting peace in the North-East.
