Aston Villa Beat Man United 2–1 as Rogers Fires Title Charge
Aston Villa boosted their surprise Premier League title challenge on Sunday with a 2–1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park. Morgan Rogers scored twice to deliver another statement performance for Unai Emery’s side.
The result moved Villa to within three points of leaders Arsenal and one behind second-placed Manchester City. It also strengthened the belief that a genuine title push is now realistic.
Rogers Leads Villa’s Latest Statement Win
Villa took the lead late in the first half through a moment of quality from Rogers. The midfielder finished off a swift counter-attack with a curling strike that beat United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Manchester United responded almost immediately. Matheus Cunha capitalised on a defensive lapse to equalise on the stroke of half-time and briefly halt Villa’s momentum.
After the interval, Rogers struck again to restore Villa’s advantage. He reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area and guided a calm finish into the corner.
The goal marked his sixth in six league appearances. It also highlighted his growing influence in Villa’s title charge.
Villa Park Fortress Drives Momentum
The victory extended Villa’s winning run to 10 matches in all competitions. It is their longest sequence since 1914.
Villa have also now won seven consecutive Premier League matches. They last achieved that feat during the 1989–90 season.
The run contrasts sharply with their difficult start to the campaign. Villa collected just two points and scored one goal in their opening five matches.
Since then, Emery has turned Villa Park into a fortress. The club has suffered only one home league defeat in 2025, fewer than any other side.
United Injury Woes Add to Problems
For Manchester United, the defeat marked their second loss in 11 league matches. It also left them winless in their last two games after the draw with Bournemouth.
Their problems deepened when captain Bruno Fernandes limped off at half-time with an apparent hamstring injury. The setback added to an already lengthy injury list.
United created chances after falling behind. However, Emiliano Martinez produced key saves to preserve Villa’s lead and secure another vital win.
