Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar registered with the African Democratic Congress in Adamawa State. He picked up his membership card at Jada Ward 1 in Jada Local Government Area.
Supporters cheered loudly as his convoy arrived. They beat drums and waved placards with his image. Atiku waved back and greeted the crowd warmly.
Additionally, Atiku posted a photo on X holding his card. He captioned it simply, “It’s official. -AA.” This act confirmed his full commitment to the party.
Reasons Behind the Move
Atiku left the Peoples Democratic Party in July due to internal crises. He then endorsed ADC as a platform for opposition leaders. Figures like Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal joined this effort to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
However delays occurred because old membership cards became invalid under new leadership. David Mark serves as national chairman, and Rauf Aregbesola acts as secretary.
Aregbesola registered symbolically on November 19 to lead by example.Atiku described ADC as Nigeria’s new political movement during a Yola meeting. He asked supporters if they would accept him, and they shouted “Yes.”
Implications for 2027 Elections
This move strengthens ADC and unites the opposition. Atiku and Obi together earned over 12 million votes in 2023, surpassing Tinubu’s total. Therefore a combined force could defeat the All Progressives Congress.
Moreover ADC plans a democratic process to select its presidential candidate. Party leaders dismiss ambition conflicts. Yet internal disputes in Adamawa’s ADC chapter pose challenges. Atiku’s entry signals a major shift in politics.
