Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, has urged Nigerians to resist any attempt to turn the country into a one-party state.
He made the remark on Monday during a visit to the Abuja residence of Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation, who faces corruption charges filed by the EFCC.
Atiku said Nigerians have the right to elect leaders. He said such leaders must represent their interests and promote unity and progress.
He added that a group of political actors has aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). They aim to promote national unity and democratic values.
“All of us here have decided to pitch our tent with the ADC. We believe, as diverse as we are, we are united in one pursuit — unity and indivisibility,” he said.
Furthermore, he said the group remains committed to protecting democracy. He noted that many Nigerians fought for it. Some paid the ultimate price.
However, Atiku warned Nigerians not to stay passive. He urged them to resist threats to democratic governance.
“We shall never stand idle and watch this country transform into a one-party rule,” he said.
Meanwhile, he assured Malami and others of continued support.
