Legislative businesses at the Bauchi State House of Assembly have ground to a halt following a nationwide strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN).
PASAN Strike Targets Financial Autonomy
The staff downed tools to demand financial independence for state legislatures. Adamu Yusuf, Chairman of PASAN in Bauchi, confirmed the industrial action on Friday.
He explained that the strike aligns with directives from the national leadership of the association and aims to compel the Federal Government to fully implement the Financial Autonomy Act—a key step toward strengthening parliamentary independence and democratic governance.
“PASAN has embarked on various strikes in the past to push for the enforcement of the law, but the federal government is yet to fully implement it,” Yusuf said.
State Chapters Unite in Collective Action
Yusuf noted that the strike represents a coordinated effort by PASAN state chapters to intensify pressure for the long-awaited reform.
“The workers embarked on the strike as a last resort after exhausting avenues for dialogue and negotiations with the relevant government agencies,” he added.
Despite the strike, Yusuf commended Governor Bala Mohammed for his commitment to granting financial autonomy to the Bauchi State House of Assembly.
“This is a commendable step that aligns with the broader national demand for legislative independence,” he said.
Conclusion: Call for Full Implementation
The strike highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing the Financial Autonomy Act across Nigeria. Lawmakers and staff alike are urging the Federal Government to act swiftly, ensuring state legislatures operate independently and effectively.
