Beautiful Nubia accuses Yinka Ayefele, BBO of Song theft

Veteran Nigerian singer, Beautiful Nubia, has accused fellow musicians Yinka Ayefele and BBO of copyright infringement.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter). The folk artist alleged that both musicians copied the melody of his original song, “Seven Lifes.”

He specifically pointed out that Yinka Ayefele’s 2012 track, “My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti). And BBO’s recent song, “Amin,” were directly influenced by his work. Beautiful Nubia expressed concern over the lack of respect for copyright and originality among Nigerian musicians, particularly gospel artists.

The post quickly stirred online debate, with users sharing mixed opinions.

One user disagreed with the accusation, arguing that creativity in music and literature often builds on existing works. They referenced the concept of intertextuality, explaining that every melody is shaped by past influences.

Another user, however, said they noticed similarities between “Seven Lifes” and BBO’s “Amin” when they first heard the latter.

Some commenters defended the accused artists. Stating that musicians naturally draw inspiration from what they hear, and similarities don’t always indicate intentional copying.

One person added that BBO had previously mentioned getting the idea for “Amin” during his NYSC days. Long before the current controversy.
