Bishop Hassan Kukah Pays Visit to Nnamdi Kanu at Sokoto Prison

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah visited Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on December 18, 2025. Omoyele Sowore shared this news on social media. He praised the bishop for showing support.

As a result, the visit highlights compassion from the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto. Sowore noted it represents solidarity with Kanu during his hardship.

Background on Nnamdi Kanu

Authorities convicted Kanu on November 20, 2025, for terrorism charges. The Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced him to life imprisonment. He faced seven counts, including incitement.

Consequently, officials transferred him to Sokoto on November 21. This move followed a court order excluding Kuje Prison. Kanu’s team now seeks his return to Abuja for easier appeal access.

Purpose of the Visit

Bishop Kukah offered spiritual guidance during the meeting. He aimed to console Kanu and promote peace discussions. However Kanu’s defence argues the trial lacked fairness. They claim broadcasts from the UK fall outside Nigeria’s jurisdiction.

Reactions from Public Figures

Sowore commended Kukah’s action publicly. He described it as a symbol of unity from the diocese. Meanwhile earlier visitors included Abia Governor Alex Otti and Sokoto Governor Ahmad Aliyu in late November. These gestures fuel calls for Kanu’s release.

Broader implications

The visit brings hope for dialogue in the Nigerian divide. However the visit raises questions about justice and reconciliation. On the other hand, there are calls for civil remedies that will see Kanu released. Doing so could bring back stability in the regions affected by the crisis.
