The Presiding Bishop of Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Francis Wale-Oke, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to flush out what he described as moles and fifth columnists within Nigeria’s security system. According to him, these elements continue to undermine efforts to end widespread insecurity.
The cleric said insecurity has now surpassed corruption as Nigeria’s most pressing challenge. While he acknowledged recent government actions, he stressed that stronger and more decisive steps are required.
Call for overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture
Speaking at an end-of-year luncheon with journalists in Ibadan, Wale-Oke said Nigeria’s security framework needs a comprehensive overhaul. He urged the President to pursue justice without sparing anyone found culpable.
Furthermore, he warned that compromised personnel within the system have continued to sabotage operations. According to him, such internal sabotage has led to avoidable losses among security officers.
Criticism of reintegration of bandits
Wale-Oke criticised the previous policy of reintegrating so-called repentant bandits into the military. He described the approach as dangerous and said it weakens the security system from within.
He argued that governance must prioritise justice and accountability. In his view, criminals should face the full weight of the law rather than rehabilitation into security institutions.
Bishop commends Tinubu’s recent actions
Despite his criticism, Wale-Oke praised President Tinubu for recent leadership changes within the armed forces. He said the appointment of new security chiefs signalled renewed determination to tackle insecurity.
However, he urged the President to sustain the momentum and push reforms to their logical conclusion. He warned that failure to curb insecurity could threaten national stability.
Appeal to religious and political leaders
In addition, the bishop called on Islamic leaders to openly condemn crimes carried out in the name of religion. He specifically urged the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, to speak against kidnapping, banditry, and insurgency.
Wale-Oke also appealed to politicians to prioritise good governance and tackle corruption sincerely. He warned against using anti-corruption agencies as political tools.
Message of hope to Nigerians
Ending on a hopeful note, the cleric encouraged Nigerians to remain united and optimistic. He urged citizens to work together to end violence and restore peace across the country.
