The rival cult gangs unleashed terror in Benue State Nigeria. They killed at least eight people in a supremacy fight. The supremacy fight made people live in fear. The government is now working to restore peace.
The Clash Begins
Violence broke out on Wednesday at Jato Aka, Kwande Local Government Area. There was a fight between two rival cult groups, leading to the death of two people.
Guns and machetes were used as weapons during the attack. There was pandemonium as people clashed for supremacy. But the fight did not stop at this location.
Spread of Violence
The fighting engulfed Makurdi and other settlements. Rival factions clashed at Wurukum as well as other local government areas. Gunmen killed their rivals in other attacks. However other people were killed as a result of getting caught up in the crossfire.
The violence has been reported to have engulfed a total of four local government areas. Additionally the violence left the residents of the affected areas caught off guard due to its sudden nature.
Casualties & Injuries
Eight people died in the bloodshed. Victims suffered gunshot wounds at close range. Several others sustained injuries and received medical treatment.
For instance, hospitals in nearby areas treated the wounded. Tragically, the death toll rose as clashes continued into the night. In addition, families mourned their losses amid the turmoil.
Police Response
The authorities took immediate action. Eight suspects belonging to cults have been arrested by the police. They also seized weapons in raids conducted on the suspects.
In addition, patrols have been intensified in areas where the attacks occurred to avoid more incidents. The authorities called for calm while investigations are underway. Therefore more arrests could follow.
Community Impact
Inhabitants ran for their lives. Some business premises closed. These actions led to fear. Moreover the issue came at a time when Benue has a history of cult violence. Therefore the people of the region need tougher measures to contain the cults.
A call for unity was made to fight cultism. Leaders emphasized education and programs for youths as a way to stop cult membership.
