A late-night attack on a military base has left soldiers dead but insurgents pushed back.
The Defence Headquarters Nigeria has confirmed that soldiers were killed during a Borno terrorist attack on troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Benisheikh, Borno State. The Borno terrorist attack incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. when insurgents attempted to breach the base of the 29 Task Force Brigade.
According to Michael Onoja, troops responded with “exceptional courage” and repelled the attackers using superior firepower. While the military did not disclose the exact number of casualties, it confirmed that “a few” soldiers lost their lives in the encounter.
Residents reported coordinated attacks in Benisheikh, Ngamdu, and surrounding communities. A key highway linking Damaturu and Maiduguri was closed for several hours, with reports of damaged military equipment and facilities.
In Pulka, stray bullets reportedly injured civilians during the exchange of fire. Authorities have urged the public to disregard unverified reports circulating on social media.
The Borno terrorist attack case comes amid ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in Nigeria’s North-East. The military says clearance operations are ongoing to track fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges in the region despite intensified military operations.
