A Brown University shooting killed two students and injured nine others in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday. Police have since detained a suspect in connection with the attack.

The gunman opened fire inside a classroom at the Holley Engineering Building at about 4:00 p.m. local time. The incident sparked panic across the Ivy League campus.

Brown University Shooting Leaves Students Injured

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said seven injured students remain in stable condition. Doctors listed one student in critical condition, while another victim has already left the hospital.

Brown University President Christina Paxson told reporters that all the victims were students. Officials have not released their identities.

On Sunday, Paxson said some areas of the campus remain restricted as investigators continue their work. She added that the university relocated about 2,000 students to safe locations overnight.

University, Community Rally After Attack

Paxson praised students and residents who opened their homes to displaced students. She said the university is supporting the families of the two students who died.

“There are not enough words of comfort for families who lose a child, but we will do all we can,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mayor Smiley lifted the earlier shelter-in-place order. He said he visited victims and their families in hospital and expressed admiration for their strength.

A vigil will hold on Sunday evening to honour the victims and support the campus community.

Police, FBI Track and Detain Suspect

Earlier, police released CCTV footage showing a man dressed in black walking away from the scene. Officers later tracked the suspect to a hotel in Coventry.

Providence Police detained him in the early hours of Sunday after receiving a lead. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest in a post on X.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said investigators are working with prosecutors to gather evidence. He added that officers did not find a firearm during their initial search of the building.

Hundreds of police officers and federal agents joined the manhunt after the Brown University shooting.

White House Reacts

At the White House, President Donald Trump wished the injured students a quick recovery. He also expressed condolences to the families of those killed.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the incident raises the number of mass shootings in the United States this year to 389. The group defines mass shootings as incidents with four or more victims killed or injured, excluding the attacker.
